About
Davide Santon is an Italian defender who plays for Serie A club F.C. Internazionale Milano. A pacy runner with good stamina, he is capable of operating on both flanks, even though his preferred position is at right back.

Background

Santon was born in Portomaggiore and played youth football for Ravenna Calcio before heading up north to Milan as a fourteen-year-old. He used to play as a winger but was moved back to defense and has played there ever since.

Club Football
After enjoying a successful time in Inter's youth squads, Santon made his first team debut on January 21, 2009 in the Coppa Italia quarterfinal tie against Roma. He greatly impressed during the Champions League first knockout round against defending Champions League winners Manchester United where he played directly against Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo. His calm and composed performances earned good reviews and the teenager was praised by his coach José Mourinho and even Ronaldo himself. The teenager went on to the make thirteen starts and won the Serie A title in his debut season in the first team.

During the 2009-10 campaign, Santon endured a mixed season due to his injury problems and a recurring knee injury. He was sidelined for a month after undergoing surgery at the beginning of April.

International Football

An international since the U-16 level, Santon made a goal-scoring debut for the U-17 team in a 3-1 win over Slovenia in April 2007. In March 2009, he made his U-21 debut in the friendly against the Netherlands.

Marcello Lippi then handed Santon his full international debut in the friendly against Northern Ireland on June 6, 2009 and named him in the squad for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.
